Aswan is the most relaxing city in Egypt — slower pace, cleaner streets, and stunning Nile views. Take time to simply sit by the river and watch the feluccas sail by. The Nubian influence gives the city a unique character with colourful houses and genuine hospitality. Aswan is the perfect place to unwind after Cairo's intensity.
Philae Temple
Philae Temple on Agilkia Island is accessed by a short motorboat ride (5 min). The temple is dedicated to the goddess Isis and is beautifully preserved. Visit in the morning when the light hits the front pylons directly. The optional sound and light show in the evening is magical with the temple reflected in the water.
Nubian Village Visit
The Nubian villages on the West Bank are worth the boat trip — houses are painted in bright colours with crocodile motifs. You can visit a Nubian family home, try traditional bread, and see crocodiles (kept as pets). The Nubian Museum in Aswan is excellent for understanding Nubian history and culture.
Abu Simbel Tip
Abu Simbel is an optional 3 AM start (4-hour drive each way) but absolutely worth it. The temple relocation project is a modern engineering marvel — the entire temple was cut into blocks and reassembled higher up. Book this in advance as permits are limited. The best photos are at sunrise when the facade is lit perfectly.
