Philae Temple on Agilkia Island: boat access, Isis sanctuary highlights, and the evening sound and light show.
Getting to Philae Temple: Boat Access and Island Setting
Philae Temple occupies a small island called Agilkia, reached by a short motorboat ride from the mainland near Aswan. The boat journey itself is part of the experience โ gliding across the reservoir with views of the temple rising from the water. The temple was relocated to Agilkia Island in the 1970s by UNESCO to save it from the rising waters of Lake Nasser after the construction of the Aswan High Dam.
The boat ride takes approximately 10โ15 minutes each way. Boats operate on a shared or private basis. A private boat allows you to set your own schedule and linger longer at the temple. For Korean travelers, early morning arrival is recommended to avoid midday heat and crowds.

- Private boat allows flexible timing and longer visits
- UNESCO relocated the temple to Agilkia Island in the 1970s

Temple Highlights: The Sanctuary of Isis
The main temple is dedicated to the goddess Isis, one of the most important deities in the Egyptian pantheon. The structure is remarkably well-preserved, with its first pylon towering 18 meters high and decorated with scenes of Pharaoh Ptolemy XII smiting enemies before Isis, Horus, and Hathor. Inside, the sanctuary of Isis still contains the granite base where the goddess cult statue once stood.
The Philae Temple complex also includes the Kiosk of Trajan, often called Pharaoh Bed, a graceful 14-column pavilion at the water edge that is one of the most photographed spots in all of Egypt. Small chapels dedicated to Hathor and the deified Imhotep add layers to the visit.
