Valley of the Kings: tomb selection, ticket tips, photography rules, and crowd avoidance strategy.
Choosing Which Tombs to Visit in the Valley of the Kings
The Valley of the Kings contains 63 known tombs and chambers, but a standard ticket grants access to only three. Choosing the right three is essential. The most recommended combination includes KV2 (Ramesses IV) for its well-preserved ceiling天文 text, KV11 (Ramesses III) for the longest tomb with vivid wall reliefs, and KV6 (Ramesses IX) for its atmospheric descending corridor.
For serious enthusiasts, additional tickets are available for the most famous tombs: KV62 (Tutankhamun) — small but historically essential, and KV9 (Ramesses VI) — one of the best-decorated tombs in the valley. KV17 (Seti I) is the longest and most beautiful but requires a premium ticket. Plan your choices based on interest level: first-time visitors do well with the standard three, while returning visitors might focus on the premium tombs only.
- Standard ticket: 3 tombs of your choice from the open group
- Best standard trio: KV2 (Ramesses IV), KV11 (Ramesses III), KV6 (Ramesses IX)
- Premium add-on: KV62 (Tutankhamun) — essential for history context
- Premium add-on: KV9 (Ramesses VI) — best-decorated ceiling
- Premium add-on: KV17 (Seti I) — longest and most beautiful tomb
Practical Tips for Visiting the Valley of the Kings
The Valley of the Kings opens at 6 AM — arriving early is the single most important tip. The site gets crowded by 9 AM, especially during peak season (November–February). Start with the most popular tombs first: KV11 and KV2 tend to draw the longest queues. Bring water, wear comfortable walking shoes, and be prepared for stairs and ramps inside the tombs — the descent can be steep in some chambers.
Photography rules have changed: most standard tombs now allow photography without flash, but Tutankhamun's tomb and Seti I's tomb have stricter restrictions. The visitor center has a good model of the valley showing tomb locations and a shuttle runs from the parking area to the entrance (included in the ticket).
- Open at 6 AM — arrive before 8 AM to beat the crowds
- Peak season (Nov–Feb): expect queues by 9 AM
- Visit KV11 and KV2 first — longest queues form here
- Most standard tombs: photography allowed without flash
- Shuttle from parking to entrance included in ticket price
