The Modern Library: Mission and Architecture

The Bibliotheca Alexandrina opened in 2002 as a cultural revival of the ancient Library of Alexandria, which once held the largest collection of scrolls in the ancient world. The modern building is a striking architectural statement: a massive tilted disc 160 meters in diameter, its granite walls carved with letters and scripts from 120 different writing systems. The roof slopes toward the Mediterranean, creating the impression of a second sun rising from the sea.

The main reading room spans 11 cascading levels and holds up to 8 million books. Natural light filters through the roof, and the space is designed to accommodate 2,000 readers at once. Beyond the library itself, the complex includes four museums (Antiquities, Manuscripts, Sadat, and History of Science), a planetarium, a conference center, and several art galleries.

What to See and How to Visit

A standard visit takes 2–3 hours. Start with the Antiquities Museum, which houses artifacts from Alexandria Greco-Roman period, including statues, coins, and jewelry recovered from underwater excavations. The Manuscripts Museum displays rare texts including an ancient Bible manuscript and scientific treatises from the Islamic Golden Age. The Sadat Museum covers the life of the former Egyptian president.

The planetarium lobby features interactive science exhibits popular with families. The library hosts rotating art exhibitions in its temporary gallery spaces. For Korean travelers, audio guides are available in English, and the gift shop sells quality reproductions of ancient maps and manuscripts. The library is closed on Fridays and public holidays.
