History, mysteries, restoration, and 2026 visiting guide for the Great Sphinx of Giza.
The Great Sphinx of Giza, carved directly from the bedrock of the Giza Plateau, is one of the world's most iconic and enigmatic monuments. Believed to have been built during the reign of Pharaoh Khafre (circa 2558–2532 BC), the Sphinx measures 73 meters long and 20 meters high, making it the largest monolith statue on Earth. The creature combines a lion's body with a human head, symbolizing royal power and divine protection. For Korean travelers, understanding the Sphinx's historical context enriches the visit considerably — it is not merely a backdrop for photos but a testament to ancient engineering and religious symbolism.
The Sphinx has endured millennia of wind, sand, and human intervention. It was buried up to its neck in desert sand for much of its history, with recorded clearance efforts dating back to Thutmose IV in 1400 BC. Modern restoration projects in the 20th and 21st centuries have addressed erosion damage, structural cracks, and groundwater threats. Despite extensive study, mysteries remain — the exact purpose of the Sphinx, the identity of its face, and the function of the so-called "Dream Stela" between its paws continue to spark debate among Egyptologists.
The Sphinx is located on the Giza Plateau, directly in front of the Pyramids complex. The best viewing experience is from the Sphinx Panorama point, which offers a full profile view with the Pyramid of Khafre in the background. The Sphinx enclosure allows close-up access to the base, though direct contact with the statue is not permitted. Early morning (opening at 7 AM) provides the best lighting for photography and the smallest crowds. The Sphinx is also visible from the nearby Giza Plateau Sound and Light Show in the evening.
For Korean travelers, a guided visit is strongly recommended. Knowledgeable guides explain the Sphinx's historical layers, point out the Dream Stela inscriptions, and share restoration stories that are not visible from self-guided visits. Combine the Sphinx with the Pyramids and optionally the Grand Egyptian Museum in a single day. The Sphinx area is wheelchair accessible, and shade is minimal, so bring sun protection, water, and a hat.
