Guide to the Cave Church of St. Simon: history, cave sanctuary, and practical visiting tips.
The Cave Church of St. Simon the Tanner (also known as the Monastery of St. Simon) is one of the largest churches in the Middle East, carved into the Mokattam Mountain in southeastern Cairo. It belongs to the Coptic Orthodox tradition and honors St. Simon the Tanner, a 10th-century saint who, according to Coptic tradition, moved the Mokattam Mountain through faith. The church complex was excavated beginning in the 1970s and now features seven cave churches, with the main sanctuary capable of holding up to 20,000 worshippers. The amphitheater-style seating, rock-cut pillars, and religious murals create a profoundly atmospheric space.
Mokattam Village, also known as the "Garbage City," is the neighborhood surrounding the Cave Church. It is home to Cairo's zabaleen (garbage collectors), mostly Coptic Christians who have built a remarkable recycling economy. Visiting the Cave Church offers insight into this vibrant community's faith, resilience, and daily life. The contrast between the industrial recycling activity on the streets and the serene spiritual atmosphere inside the cave churches is one of Cairo's most unique cultural experiences.
The Cave Church is located in the Mokattam district, approximately 30 minutes by car from downtown Cairo. The most common approach is to include it as part of a half-day tour that also covers Old Cairo and the Hanging Church. The drive through Mokattam Village provides a glimpse into the zabaleen community's recycling operations, which many visitors find as memorable as the church itself. Guided tours are strongly recommended for this area, as navigating the narrow streets and finding the church entrance can be challenging without local knowledge.
Visitors should dress modestly (covering shoulders and knees) as this is an active religious site. The best time to visit is mid-morning (10 AM to noon) when the sunlight streams through the cave openings, illuminating the rock-cut interior. Photography is permitted, and the panoramic view of Cairo from the church terrace is excellent. There is no entrance fee, but donations are welcome. Note that the area can be dusty and the roads may be steep in sections — wear sturdy shoes and bring water.
